In his freshman year, he caught 20 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns. His sophomore year was even more impressive, with 38 receptions for 462 yards and six touchdowns.

Despite his impressive college career, Tonyan went undrafted in the 2017 NFL Draft. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Detroit Lions but was released during the preseason. Tonyan then signed with the Green Bay Packers, where he spent most of his first season on the practice squad.
In 2018, Tonyan made the Packers’ active roster and played in all 16 games, catching four passes for 77 yards and one touchdown. In 2019, Tonyan’s role on the team increased, and he caught 10 passes for 100 yards and one touchdown. In 2020, Tonyan had a breakout season, catching 52 passes for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns, earning him a spot in the Pro Bowl.
